The road not taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;


Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,


And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.


I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

La route non empruntée

Deux routes bifurquaient dans un bois jaune

Et au regret de ne pouvoir prendre les deux

Car voyageant seul, je suis resté longtemps

Les yeux fixés sur l’une des deux aussi loin que je le pouvais

Jusqu’à un virage qui se perdait dans les broussailles ;


Alors j’ai suivi l’autre route, tout aussi envisageable

Et peut-être même plus justifiée encore

Parce que recouverte d’herbes ne demandant qu’à être foulées ;

Cependant, ceux qui étaient passés par là

Les avaient empruntées de façon assez semblable.


Et toutes deux en ce matin s’étiraient

Parmi des feuilles qu’aucun pas n’avait encore souillées

Je réservais la première route pour une autre fois

Sachant pourtant qu’un chemin menant à un autre chemin,

Je doutais d’y revenir jamais.


Un jour, dans des années et des années

Je conterai tout cela en soupirant, à savoir que

Deux routes bifurquaient dans un bois, et que moi —

J’ai suivi celle par laquelle on chemine le moins souvent

Et cela a fait toute la différence.
